What weeks! While down in the valley and far beyond Bavaria and Austria, a historic heat wave has provided record temperatures, we have used the stable high-pressure positions over Berchtesgaden quite differently: Crisp distance vision far beyond the Watzmann and strong thermals. For us tandem pilots this was the dream combination – and for our guests several times the opportunity to tick off a point on the bucket list: the Watzmann overrunHigh above the Königssee, with a view of the east wall, the Watzmannfrau and the entire Berchtesgadener Land.
Perfect thermal weather for tandem paragliding
For those who fly themselves or are interested in a tandem flight: thermals are created when the sun heats the ground and warm air packages rise. Exactly these conditions we had day after day – stable high-pressure positions, hardly any wind in the altitude, but strong, super calm thermal hoses that gave us climb values that you would otherwise only dream of. The result: long flight times, high starting altitudes and dreamlike route flights – great! to experience the complete Watzmann crossing from the air from the starting point instead of hiking it on foot in two days.
Several of our guests were able to experience exactly that: a tandem flight that led them not only over Berchtesgaden and Königssee, but directly along the striking silhouette of the Watzmann. An experience that you don’t forget so quickly – and that you usually only associate with hiking boots and several days of tour planning.
Coolcation instead of heat wave: pleasantly cool above
While in the cities the temperatures climbed to record values and many were looking for cooling, we felt less in the height of the heat wave. From about 2,600 meters, a light jacket was not a bad idea – a wonderful contrast to the oppressive sultry in the valley. No wonder the term "Coolcation" This summer like a red thread through the travel planning: Instead of chasing the heat, you simply flee to the top. And where could this be more impressive than on a tandem flight over the Berchtesgaden National Park: with wind instead of air conditioning and a view for which you would otherwise have to walk for hours uphill!

This is exactly what makes tandem flying in Berchtesgaden so special: You start in the summer flair of the Berchtesgadener Land and are within a few minutes over one of the most spectacular backdrops of the Alps – the deep green Königssee, framed by the rugged rock faces of the Watzmassiv. The last few weeks with their stable thermal weather have given us conditions that were far above average: quiet starting windows, clean thermals and a long-distance view that extended deep into the Salzburg countryside.
